The Netherlands is a low-lying country, with about 27 percent of its area, where 60 percent of its population live, below sea level. This distinctive feature led to the country's name: in Dutch Nederland, in English the Netherlands - which literally means "low lands." The Netherlands is one of the world's most densely populated countries.

Education in the Netherlands is characterized by division: education is oriented toward the needs and background of the pupil. Educational policy is coordinated by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science with municipal governments. The Netherlands is presently pursuing a forceful internationalization strategy and seeks to attract growing numbers of international students and immigrants. Dutch universities are known to be among the best universities in the world, competing with other famous UK and U.S. universities. The Dutch government funds primary, secondary, vocational, and higher education in the Netherlands. Education is therefore mostly free. However, students and their families are usually required to pay some additional fees.

Dutch higher education is subsidized by the government and tuition fees are relatively low. The quality of education is among the best in the world, universities offer various English-language programs, and studying in the Netherlands is affordable compared to countries such as the UK and the US. The Netherlands has the largest range of English language programs in Europe. Almost every university has an English version of any program taught in Dutch. The programs in the Netherlands are highly regarded at the international level. It is interactive and the students are taught not just to think for themselves but to work together in groups.
