Hungary lies at the center of Europe in the Carpathian Basin, surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, bordered by Slovakia to the north, Ukraine to the northeast, Romania to the east, and south-east, Serbia and Croatia to the south, Slovenia to the south-west, and Austria to the west. Hungary is a republic, and it has been a member of the United Nations since 1955, NATO since 1999, and the European Union since 2004.
Education in Hungary is predominantly public, run by the Ministry of Human Resources. Most of the Hungarian universities are public institutions, and students traditionally study without fee payment. The general requirement for university is the Matura. The Hungarian public higher education system includes universities and other higher education institutes that provide both education curricula and related degrees up to doctoral degrees and also contribute to research activities. Health insurance for students is free until the end of their studies. English and German language are important in Hungarian higher education; there are a number of degree programs that are taught in these languages, which attracts thousands of exchange students every year. These universities and colleges are maintained either by the state, private organizations, or a church.
